Dear Lamar - Thanks. Love your down-to-earthness ~ Happiness is a way of living -not a destination. Almost a senior and consider myself a lady 'inspector gadget'. Saw 'One Step Gardening' show on internet. Fascinating to 'stagger' crops/planting to keep a continuous crop right 'til winter -that's where the square foot comes in. Great show and others like "Victory Garden" - very inspirational - like your website here. Tough times have hit again. But-When the going gets Tough - the Tough get going. Time to make that 5cent Buffalo speak. Americans share the yeast -and other such things in times like these. I would like to share something also here. Grew up a poor city girl - so I saw life from the ground up 'so to speak'. Saw my deaf father repair 'toilet bowls' -quite an inspiration for a little one. One of first magazines loved (found in bathroom) was 'Popular Mechanics' magazines of the 50's. Since computers -too little manpower/money -they deep-sixed a generation's worth of do-it-yourself knowledge -only research kept by companies probably now defunct -couldn't believe magnitude of loss - articles such as how to make your own 'concrete' posts for fencing (formed in halved piping). Mind-bending. Or -make your own grow lights (how/why) using fluorescent and incandesant bulbs cheaply__One article I'll never forget - written in the '50's -deep-sixed. Not rocket science -not to be found anywhere. A man was standing next to a 5 tier structure almost as tall as he was it had (5 ft diameter but a 2 1/2 foot reach to middle) shaped like a wedding cake but was a gardening structure. He was selling instructions on how to put this together and why this was phenomenal. The benefits he said were -1. Minimal bending -a great feature for seniors/disabled/others 2. Accessibility terrific by simply walking around. 3. Water efficient using a garden hose spray on top that catches on lower tiers or -trickle down technique -each level catches some -continues to trickle to bottom layers 4. Rodent deterrent as levels are constructed non-breachable with metal mesh underlying each layer 5. Easy to cover entire structure making into 4 season mini-greenhouse in some areas 6. Easy to cover with plastic mesh to deter birds eating berries. 7. Light intensive plants face the sun -shade loving plants placed opposite side -or unit can have sun reflector to light up dark side of structure. 9. Structure is high as you can 'work' the area - but can have more than one structure in relatively small space. He explained that you could grow bushels of food with this as square footage was incredible because of the levels & many plants really don't require deep dirt -just good moisture. Along with your incredible solar house, rotating barrel composter - how about this fantastic structure? :) Also - some hard to find linkage for off-the-gridders -http://www.insulation4less.com/. Don't know what kind of insulation solar house uses -can never be a wilderness babe due to circumstances but - this is awesome. Another for wilderness living -runs on propane - http://www.skeeter-vac-depot.com Another: http://www.clearpvcpipe.com and see the actual propane in the bottle - http://www.litecylinder.com Here's to you Lamar - Long Life & Happiness!
